CVE-2022-4987 affects Hirschmann Industrial HiVision version 08.1.03 prior to 08.1.04 and version 08.2.00. The vulnerability exists in the execution of user-configured external applications and is caused by insufficient path sanitization. A local attacker can place a malicious binary in the execution path of a configured external application so that the malicious program is launched instead of the intended executable. Because the substituted binary may run in the security context of the HiVision process or the configured external application workflow, successful exploitation can lead to arbitrary binary execution and potentially elevated privileges depending on that execution context.
