Cross-Site Scripting in Splunk /app/search/table dataset.command

IdentifiersCVE-2025-20367CWE-79· Improper Neutralization of Input…

CVE-2025-20367 is a cross-site scripting vulnerability in Splunk Enterprise and Splunk Cloud Platform. In Splunk Enterprise versions below 9.4.4, 9.3.6, and 9.2.8, and Splunk Cloud Platform versions below 9.3.2411.109, 9.3.2408.119, and 9.2.2406.122, a low-privileged authenticated user who does not have the 'admin' or 'power' roles can craft a malicious payload via the dataset.command parameter of the /app/search/table endpoint. If processed and rendered in another user's browser, the payload can trigger unauthorized JavaScript execution in that browser. The issue is therefore a stored or reflected XSS-style injection point in Splunk Web functionality associated with the table/search application path.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows attacker-controlled JavaScript to execute in the context of a victim user's browser session in Splunk Web. This can enable session theft, access to sensitive data visible to the victim, execution of actions as the victim within the web application, and follow-on abuse of the victim's privileges. Impact depends on the privileges of the targeted user and the browser session context.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, disable Splunk Web where operationally feasible, since exploitation results in JavaScript execution in the browser through the web interface. Restrict access for low-privileged users and minimize assignment of roles that can interact with affected web functionality. Monitor for suspicious use of the /app/search/table endpoint and anomalous values supplied to the dataset.command parameter. No specific detection signatures were noted in the provided material.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Splunk Enterprise to a fixed release: 9.4.4, 9.3.6, 9.2.8, or later. For Splunk Cloud Platform, fixed versions are 9.3.2411.109, 9.3.2408.119, 9.2.2406.122, or later; Splunk stated that cloud patches are being or have been applied automatically depending on the service instance. Validate that all affected Splunk Web components are updated to the vendor-fixed build.
