CVE-2026-26268 is a sandbox escape vulnerability in the Cursor AI code editor affecting versions prior to 2.5. A malicious agent, including one influenced through prompt injection, could write to insufficiently protected .git configuration within a repository context, including Git hook settings. By planting or modifying Git hooks in an embedded or otherwise reachable Git repository, the attacker can cause code to execute outside Cursor’s sandbox the next time the relevant Git operation triggers the hook. The issue arises from improper protection of .git settings that should not have been writable by the agent in a way that could influence host-side Git execution. The vulnerability was fixed in Cursor 2.5.

An earlier Cursor vulnerability involving a malicious Git hook in a repository that executed when the agent ran a Git command.
A previously disclosed Cursor sandbox escape vulnerability involving writes to .git configuration files and hooks, leading to out-of-sandbox remote code execution.
A high-severity arbitrary code execution vulnerability in Cursor prior to version 2.5 involving sandbox escape through .git configurations and malicious Git hooks, triggered via prompt injection and autonomous Git operations.
A high-severity remote code execution vulnerability in Cursor that can be triggered when a developer clones a malicious repository; exploitation abuses embedded bare repositories and malicious Git hooks executed by the Cursor AI agent.
